Sign the petition against the Deer Park Tanger Outlet!

The current plan facing the Deer Park Community will greatly affect the quality of life of every Deer Park resident. The proposed plan in front of the Babylon Board is to demolish the 760,000 square foot EDO/AIL plant and replace it with a new TANGER MALL. According Newsday, March 16th, 2005 article, this 81 acre shopping center will include a BJ's Wholesale Club, and a 3,000 seat UA Multiplex Theater. According to the public notice it will be "Smart Style Outlet Center" with retail, restaurants, gasoline service station & multiplex movie theater and 4,723 parking stalls.

Anyone who as traveled Deer Park Ave. or Commack Road during rush hour, or really just about any time of day or night, is well aware that the traffic situation is barely tolerable at best. The developer is claiming they haven't caused the current traffic problem, but they also won't admit that their plan will make a bad situation worse. Our roads are currently in disrepair and the increased traffic flow will create more wear and tear on our roads and will probably also affect our air quality.

Supporters of the project are claiming that this project would create jobs and generate tax money for the local schools. Did anyone see their taxes decrease when Home Depot, Grand Union (now Stop & Shop), and Caldor (now Kohls) opened? As far as creating jobs, the retailers that are currently here are having trouble hiring. We don't need anymore minimum wage jobs. Tanger made the same claims when they were promoting the construction of the Riverhead Outlets. The Riverhead Tanger Mall received a 20 year tax abatement. So Riverhead has yet to see a cent go back into the community, but I am sure it has cost Riverhead to fund the increase of services such as the fire department. Riverhead has yet to see any benefit from their Tanger neighbor. (postings from some Deer Park & Riverhead citizens - http://p204.ezboard.com/f631politicsfrm7.showMessage?topicID=644.topic) Also take note of who is funding the elected officials.

While this plan is going on, the is also whispering of a proposal to tear down the Finish Line shopping center, one junkyard, and at least 2 homes to create another 110,000 square feet of retail space, including an Eckerd drug store and a gas station at the corner of Nichols Road and Commack Road, just North of the proposed Tanger Mall.

Please contact the following Government Officials and let them know that Deer Park is a tight knit family community and we are not going to tolerate retail take over of our quiet community.
